My update is geared toward event shooters, for still-life and landscape shooters, my original review below stands. After a year of ownership with two bodies (three if I count a Nikon replacement), here are my final thoughts:
This is the best landscape or studio DSLR in the market. Other than not having a mode dial with Custom User Settings (U1, U2) like the D7000, this camera has near perfect ergonomics.
However, I do not recommend the D800 for paid assignments that present themselves with once in a lifetime moments, such as capturing the first kiss or truly spontaneous moments, because there is a high probability of missing focus. For photojournalistic wedding, amateur sports, or anything that requires accurate, consistent autofocus (AF) look elsewhere.
